Hello! Here is my wall of phtos(: Including some of my view points too!
Blindly obeying.............
I feel that in the Giver the people blindly obey rules. They do not question anything much and just do what they are told to do. Jonas is the only one who actually questions the rules and the communities’ objectives like sameness. They never question the fact that their spouses are chosen and they have to kill children that are different and elders because they are no longer productive. The community members unquestioningly follow rules; and over time, because killing has become a routine practice, horrible and senseless actions do not morally, emotionally, or ethically upset them.

A world of sameness.....
The chairs are all perfectly uniformed yet so lifeless! When there is no variety , things are not eye catching and it becomes boring .If everything is the same how can we show our personal interests, talents and capabilities? There are also no colours even! Can you imagine living in a world that is like a black and white television?

No choices......
In Jonas’s society people have a very restricted choice. They follow what the elders ask them to do and even when they ask for a change of law it usually never happens. This picture shows how Jonas could make a choice and remain in that restricted community or he could break through and run to another community which has more freedom.

Utopia............
At one time in the past, the people who inhabited Jonas' community intended to create a perfect society. They thought that by protecting the citizens from making wrong choices (by having no choices), the community would be safe. But the utopian ideals went awry, and people became controlled and manipulated through social conditioning and language. Now, even the expression "love" is an empty ideal.

Bye!

  2. Hi sushi! :) I think i am the first one to comment on this post...

Firstly, your first point is that people blindly obey rules. I strongly agree with your statement as the people in the community never question about their lives. They just repeatedly do the same things everyday and leave everything in the hands of the council of elders. Though they live in a place without pain (nor pleasure), I think it has been brought up to a point where there are more cons than pros. One disadvantage, as you have mentioned, is that they never question why a rule is made that killing has become a routine practice, not morally, emotionally, or ethically upsetting them.

Secondly, living without colours is definitely boring! I really do like to watch TV a lot but definitely not one that is black and white. Colours make everything so much more vibrant and they are definitely an artist’s favourite too. I guess that after you have mentioned this, I really should appreciate that our world has colour.

Well, like Ms Li said during class: “Creating utopian communities will always result in dystopian characteristics coming out”. Frankly speaking, I find the idea of protecting the people from making wrong choices by taking away all their choices is rather ridiculous. Like babies, people just have to learn to get back up on their food after fall.

I really feel that I am lucky to be leaving in such a colourful world where “love” is present!

  3. Hey 

Your pictures are very interesting and new to my eyes. I have seen repeated pictures in other blogs including mine. Firstly, I absolutely agree with your first photo about people following the rules blindly. During the evening telling of feelings, a characteristic of Jonas’s Father of being caring is exhibited yet he releases the twin brother. This shows that he is blindly follows the rules and does not think (he can’t because he cannot make choices!).

I love to watch balck and white movie, thinking of living like one, does not sound good to me. Therefore, we should have colours in our lives. Live without colours is… boring!

Lastly, I feel pity for the people in Jonas’s community as they are protected “from making wrong choices (by having no choices), the community would be safe” It is when you make wrong choices, you will learn life-long lessons.
